Anniversary Luncheon : Sunday, 27th June
I
would love to invite you to join us for our special Anniversary Luncheon. St
Matthew’s is one of our local treasures, a Grade 2 listed building and
Hull’s only full spire. It has been my great privilege to serve here as Vicar
for 31 years but that tenure is soon to come to an end. Sunday, 27th
June marks the start of a special month to celebrate our 140th anniversary and
for me to prepare for retirement! That is why I want to invite so many friends.
Over
the years I have met so many wonderful people, the regular congregation and
those through my numerous chaplaincies in the city. Friends from Hull City afc
& Hull FC, from Hull Sea Cadets & 872 Squadron, Air Cadets, from the
City Council & Hull Fair, from Paisley Primary School & the Hull
Freetown Society, from the Hull Deanery & the local CMS Association
– just some of places I’ve been honoured to serve over three decades.
You have all meant something special to me.
By
joining us for this Luncheon you will be giving us some very real encouragement.
When I retire, at the end of July, I will be leaving a church facing many
challenges. Last year we were awarded £160k special funding from English
Heritage, a brilliant vote of confidence in our lovely building, yet we are
currently unable to realise that grant as we need to match fund it ourselves to
the tune of £80k. It is my hope that this 140th Anniversary will
help to raise funds towards that target so that when I leave there will be clear
signs of progress towards the necessary renovations of the building. During the
Luncheon there will be a charity auction plus Raffle and plenty of fun! Tickets
can be bought single or in quantity and a table of ten offers an attractive
discount.
