The Diocese of Central Tanganyika (East Africa)

Please pray with us for this busy Anglican diocese in Tanzania. Our vicar visited the diocese in 1988 while he was on sabbatical. The diocese is centred upon the new capital city of Dodoma. The Bishop of DCT is the Right Rev'd Mdimi Mohogolo. We also pray for the Rev'd George Chibwale, currently pastor at Mvumi, who visited our parish about ten years ago.

CENTENARY CELEBRATION

100 years ago .......... John H Briggs brought the Gospel from the CMS Mission Station at Mpwapwa and established a new Mission Station at MVUMI, thus starting the work of the present Diocese of Central Tanganyika. In April, 1900 Briggs crossed the largely uninhabited hills from Mpwapwa and the next day he met the local Chief. He was offered some elevated ground to begin his work. So began the work of the Gospel in Mvumi. After just 12 years there were over 1,000 adults either baptised or under instruction for baptism, and over 5,200 children were being taught in the 134 schools that had been established!

Today Mvumi is best known for the “Jungle Doctor”, those delightful stories for children written by a former missionary doctor at Mvumi. The hospital today is a well staffed hospital with a specialist Eye Department, large Community Health Programme, a Nurse Training School, secondary school and lively Parish Church being pastored by a former visitor to our parish, the Rev’d George Chibwale.

To give thanks to God for His vision and praise Him for the ways He has led the Diocese over those one hundred years, DCT are planning special celebrations. Many local parishes are involved in evangelistic missions culminating in a special Convention to be held at Mvumi, starting on Friday, 30th June. These special celebrations will continue over the weekend. Some hardy folk are walking the steps of the early missionaries from Mpwapwa, hopefully arriving on July 1st. On that day there will be special events led by groups of children and young people from the Diocese.

The Diocese of Freetown, Sierra Leone (West Africa)

Please pray with us for our special links with this diocese and especially for the Bishop, The Rt. Rev'd Julius Lynch.

The Right Rev'd Julius Lynch, Bishop of Freetown,
taken during a visit to Holy Trinity Church,
Kingston Upon Hull in 1999.

Freetown is linked with the city of Kingston Upon Hull, a link which recognizes the Historic links we have through William Wilberforce, pioneer of the abolition of slavery and Hull born and bred! Freetown was established as a centre to free slaves nearly 200 years ago.

William Wilberforce

Bishop Julius visited our city and our parish in 1999 during his visit for the Bicentenary of the Church Mission Society. CMS had strong early links with this city too. Many of its founders were from Hull. The Thorntons, Venns and Scotts were some of those early Pioneers of mission links to Hull. The most famous founder, however, was William Wilberforce.

CMS (Yorkshire) commissioned a special hymn to mark the bicentenary of the society in 1999. We reproduce this in the hope that you will be encouraged to make use of it in your own church.
