Something for every visitor:
A
sincere welcome to all our visitors, with a special welcome to those
from across and beyond the UK. We are delighted that you have come to
these pages and trust that you will find something of interest. To find
your way around please use the Site Index to the left of your screen. If
you bookmark this page you will be able to return quickly and, we
hope, frequently. On these pages you can find out about our community and the City of Kingston upon Hull. We have both a history and a faith to share. Our City takes great pride in one of our greatest forbears - William Wilberforce. Wilberforce
was, of course, the leader of the movement which eventually led to the
emancipation of slaves across the world. Freetown,
Sierra Leone, was so named for the significant part it played in
the liberation of slaves. In
2007 there are major celebrations being planned to mark the 200th
anniversary of the Bill to abolish slave trading.
Hull will be at the foremost of these celebrations. As part of
the 2007 plans we are in discussion with CMS about taking a party from
the churches of Hull to Freetown. Our City of Hull has for many years been linked with Freetown and was the first city to twin with a third world community. This link has led to many significant exchanges over the years and the establishment of a Freetown Society in our city, of which we are members. St
Matthew's keeps the link further with a personal link with the Diocese
of Freetown and its bishop, the Rt Rev'd Julius
Lynch. You can read more about this link on our OVERSEAS
page and also about our link with the Diocese of Central Tanganyika in
Tanzania. We
also have our own
SPORTS
pages!
St. Matthew's has a very special ministry to the world of sport
and Allen, our Vicar, is Chaplain to both our local Association Football
and Rugby League clubs. Additionally he is Sport & Recreation
Chaplain to the East Riding Archdeaconry. One of the most
exciting developments that our City has ever seen was the building of
the £43m K.C. Super Stadium - right alongside our church! This awesome
facility, which is admired across the nation, was opened in December,
2002. It seats 25,000 people. Now you understand why we are The
Stadium Church. Our
EVENTS page will give you details of
special things happening and is always worth checking out. Our regular
Sunday Services are listed on the WORSHIP
page.
We like to think that we offer something rather different from the last church website you visited! May God bless you
Allen Bagshawe (Vicar)
and all the congregation of St. Matthew's
- The Stadium Church of Hull.
